Many famous names are associated with Cardozo’s U Street and the Le Droit Park community. In its heyday, the clubs and theaters of U Street hosted an impressive list of entertainers, including Cab Calloway, Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole, Jelly Roll Morton and, of course, Duke Ellington. Le Droit Park has long been a preferred neighborhood for some of D.C.’s most prominent and successful residents. Judge Robert Terrell and his wife Mary Church Terrell, Major Christian Fleetwood, General Benjamin Davis and poet Paul Laurence Dunbar all called Le Droit Park their home.
The part of D.C. has many landmarks and sites to explore that honor the region’s unique history and culture. A newcomer’s first course of action might be a tour of U Street, greater Cardozo or historic Le Droit Park. METRO operates guided bus and walking tours, and provides information for self-guided tours. Historic sites of note include the Mary McLeod Bethune Council House National Historic Site. Several sites also honor the region’s entertainment history, including the Duke Ellington Mural, The Lincoln Theatre and Center for the Preservation of Jazz and Blues.
Howard University is also a landmark in its own right. It was established in 1867 by a congressional charter. Famous Howard graduates include Thurgood Marshall, Toni Morrison, Debbie Allen, Roberta Flack and Phylicia Rashad.
